How To Make Homemade Baby Food: Vegetables

Vegetables — what’s not to love? Veggies are generally low in fat and calories but are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting antioxidants. Your baby needs all the nutrition vegetables have to offer — use the vegetable puree recipes below to make sure she gets it!

Homemade Sweet Potato/Yam Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour

Total Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-3 cups (depending on number of potatoes used)

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Sweet Potato/Yam Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Ingredients

  • Several medium sweet potatoes

Instructions

    Baking Method:
  1. Wash sweet potatoes, then prick all over with a fork.
  2. Wrap tightly in foil and bake in a 400 degree oven for 45-60 minutes, or until soft.
  3. Allow sweet potatoes to cool completely. Cut sweet potatoes in half and scoop out into a dish.
  4. Puree the sweet potato mixture until smooth, adding breastmilk, formula, or water to achieve your desired consistency.
  5. Boiling/Steaming Method:
  6. Wash and peel sweet potatoes, then cut them into small chunks.
  7. Boil or steam the sweet potato pieces until tender. Allow pieces to cool completely.
  8. Puree the sweet potato pieces until smooth, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (if boiling, use the cooking water) to achieve desired consistency.

Homemade Squash Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 55 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-3 cups (depending on number of potatoes used)

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Squash Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Ingredients

  • One large (or 2 medium) winter squash (like acorn or butternut)

Instructions

  1. Cut the squash in half. Scoop out the seeds.
  2. Pour a small amount of water (just enough to cover) into the bottom of a baking sheet. Place the squash halves, cut side down, on the baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 30-45 minutes in a 400 degree oven. It’s is done when the squash is tender and the tough outer skin begins to wrinkle and soften.
  4. Allow the squash halves to cool. Scoop out the squash and puree until smooth, adding breastmilk, formula, or water to achieve your desired consistency.

Homemade Green Bean Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-2 cups

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Green Bean Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. (1 pound) fresh green beans (can also use frozen)

Instructions

  1. Wash green beans and snap off the ends (skip this step if using frozen).
  2. Boil or steam green beans until tender. If boiling, reserve the cooking water.
  3. Immediately after cooking, plunge green beans into a bowl or sink full of ice water. This will help stop the cooking process.
  4. Once the green beans are cool, puree them, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (use cooking water if green beans were boiled) to achieve your desired consistency.

Notes

It’s virtually impossible to create a smooth puree from green beans, since the skins tend to be tough. For this reason, you may want to consider waiting until your baby’s old enough to handle chunkier textures before introducing green beans.

 

Homemade Carrot Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-2 cups

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Carrot Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. (1 pound) fresh carrots (can also use frozen)

Instructions

  1. Wash carrots. Peel and cut into small chunks (skip this step if using frozen).
  2. Boil or steam carrots until tender. If boiling, DO NOT reserve cooking water. Adding the cooking water back into your carrot puree increases your baby's risk of nitrate poisoning
  3. Immediately after cooking, plunge carrots into a bowl or sink full of ice water. This will help stop the cooking process.
  4. Once the carrots are cool, puree them, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (use cooking water if carrots were boiled) to achieve your desired consistency.

Homemade Pea Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-2 cups

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Pea Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. (1 pound) fresh peas (can also use frozen)

Instructions

  1. Open pea pods and scrape out the peas (skip this step if using frozen).
  2. Boil or steam peas until tender. If boiling, reserve the cooking water.
  3. Immediately after cooking, plunge peas into a bowl or sink full of ice water. This will help stop the cooking process.
  4. Once the peas are cool, puree them, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (use cooking water if peas were boiled) to achieve your desired consistency.

Homemade Broccoli (introduce at 9-10 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-2 cups

Serving Size: 3-6 Tablespoons (older babies)

Homemade Broccoli (introduce at 9-10 months)

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. (or 2-3 heads) of fresh broccoli (can also use frozen broccoli florets)

Instructions

  1. Wash broccoli. Cut florets from stems; reserve the florets and discard the stems (since florets are more tender and easier for baby to eat than stems). Skip this step if using frozen.
  2. Boil of steam broccoli until tender. If boiling, reserve the cooking water.
  3. Immediately after cooking, plunge broccoli into a bowl or sink full of ice water. This will help stop the cooking process.
  4. Once the broccoli is cool, puree it, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (use cooking water if broccoli was boiled) to achieve your desired consistency.

Notes

Now that your baby’s older, consider lightly mashing the broccoli, leaving some chunks. You could even cut the broccoli into tiny pieces and encourage him to try picking it up and feeding himself.

Steamed Spinach, Kale, or Collard Greens (introduce at 9-10 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Yield: approximately 1 cup

Serving Size: 3-6 Tablespoons (older babies)

Steamed Spinach, Kale, or Collard Greens (introduce at 9-10 months)

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. (1 pound) fresh spinach, kale, or collard greens

Instructions

  1. Wash spinach or greens carefully. If using kale or collard greens, carefully remove the tough stem that runs down the middle of each leaf.
  2. Steam the spinach or greens in a steamer basket until tender.
  3. Remove steamer basket and allow greens to cool completely.
  4. Puree greens, adding fresh water to achieve desired consistency.

How To Make Homemade Baby Food: Fruits

Few things taste better than fresh fruit. Sure, chocolate is divine, but a fresh, juicy strawberry? Heavenly! And we bet your baby agrees. She’s bound to love the natural sweetness of fruit, and you’re bound to love the loads of vitamins and minerals that fresh fruit provides.

One of the best ways to ensure that your baby is getting plenty of fresh fruit in her diet is to make some fruit purees yourself. Use the recipes below to get started.

Mashed Bananas/Avocados (introduce at 4-6 months)

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Yield: approximately 1/2 cup

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Mashed Bananas/Avocados (introduce at 4-6 months)

To pick a ripe avocado: look for avocados with dark green skin. You can also check for ripeness by doing a “thumb test.” Press the avocado with your thumb; if it leaves a small indentation, the avocado’s ripe.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana (ripe bananas work best; they mash easily and tend to have a sweeter flavor.)
  • OR
  • 1 ripe avocado (see note for information on how to choose a ripe avocado.)

Instructions

  1. Peel the banana. If using an avocado, cut the avocado in half and remove the stone in the center. Cut the banana into several large chunks, and place the chunks in a small dish. If using an avocado, scoop the avocado from the skin using a spoon.
  2. Mash the banana or avocado with a fork or a potato masher. You can thin with breastmilk or formula, if necessary.

Notes

You can freeze mashed banana of avocado the same way you’d freeze any other fruit puree. You’ll simply need to add a little lemon juice to prevent browning. However, given how easy it is to mash bananas and avocados, you’ll probably prefer to make them fresh each time you serve them to your baby.

 

Homemade Applesauce (introduce at 4-6 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-3 cups (depending on number of apples used)

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Applesauce (introduce at 4-6 months)

Ingredients

  • Several apples (cooking apples are best, as they retain their flavor and texture better. Click here for a listing of good cooking apples.)

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, and core the apples. Then, cut the apples into medium-sized chunks.
  2. Boil or steam apple chunks until tender. If boiling, reserve the cooking water.
  3. Allow apples to cool; then, puree them, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (use cooking water if apples were boiled) to achieve your desired consistency.

Notes

Applesauce is one of the few store-bought products that’s almost identical to the homemade version. If you simply don’t have time to make your own applesauce, buying it is perfectly okay, so long as you buy the “good” kind! Look for applesauce that’s labeled “natural” or “no sugar added”. The only ingredients listed should be apples, water, and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Avoid applesauce that has any added flavors or sugars (like high fructose corn syrup).

 

Homemade Pear Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-3 cups (depending on number of pears used)

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Pear Puree (introduce at 4-6 months)

Ingredients

  • Several ripe pears

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, and core the pear. Then, cut the pear into medium-sized chunks.
  2. Boil or steam the pear chunks until tender. If boiling, reserve the cooking water.
  3. Allow pears to cool; then, puree them, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (use cooking water if pears were boiled) to achieve your desired consistency.

 

Homemade Peach, Nectarine, Apricot, or Plum Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Yield: approximately 1-3 cups (depending on amount of fruit used)

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Peach, Nectarine, Apricot, or Plum Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Ingredients

  • Several ripe peaches, nectarines, or plums

Instructions

    Baking Method:
  1. Wash fruit. Cut in half and remove the pit from the center.
  2. Pour 1/2 an inch of water into a baking dish; place fruit cut-side down in dish.
  3. Bake at 375 - 400 until the fruit is tender and the skin begins to pucker and wrinkle.
  4. Peel skin from fruit. (If the skin seems soft enough, you can simply leave it on).
  5. Allow fruit to cool; then, puree it, adding breastmilk, formula, or water to achieve your desired consistency.
  6. Blanching Method:
  7. Fill a large pot halfway full of water. Bring to a boil.
  8. Wash the fruit. Add fruit to water; boil for 4-5 minutes.
  9. Peel the skin from the fruit. (If the skin seems soft enough, you can simply leave it on.)
  10. Cut the fruit in half and remove the pits from the center.
  11. Allow fruit to cool; then, puree it, adding breastmilk, formula, or water to achieve your desired consistency.

Notes

Apricot and plum purees can be slightly bitter. If this is the case, you can add a bit of white grape juice as you puree; this will offset any bitterness.

 

Homemade Mango/Papaya Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 7 minutes

Total Time: 17 minutes

Yield: approximately 1 cup

Serving Size: 1-2 T (younger babies) 3-6 T (older babies)

Homemade Mango/Papaya Puree (introduce at 7-8 months)

Mangos are ripe when their skin changes from green to a golden-red and when they’re “thumb tender” (when you press your thumb into the fruit, it leaves a small indentation). Papayas are ripe when their skin turns golden, and then they’re thumb tender.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe mango or papaya (see note for information on how to pick a ripe mango or papaya)

Instructions

  1. Peel and de-seed the fruit. Then, cut the fruit into chunks.
  2. At this point, you can simply mash the raw chunks and serve it to your baby. If you prefer to cook the fruit (to make it a bit softer, or to break down the sugars making it easier for your baby to digest), simply steam the chunks until tender (5-7 minutes).
  3. If cooking, allow the fruit to cool. The puree it, adding breastmilk, formula, or water to achieve your desired consistency.

Homemade Blueberry Puree (introduce at 9-10 months)

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 15 minutes

Yield: approximately 1/2 - 1 cup

Serving Size: 3-6 Tablespoons

Homemade Blueberry Puree (introduce at 9-10 months)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 - 1 pint blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 - 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Rinse the blueberries well (skip this step if using frozen).
  2. Boil or steam the blueberries until tender. If boiling, reserve the cooking water.
  3. Allow the blueberries to cool; then, puree them, adding breastmilk, formula, or water (use cooking water if pears were boiled) to achieve your desired consistency.

Notes

You can also leave the blueberries raw and simply mash them well with a fork, since by 9 months, your baby is ready for more texture in his food anyway.

Mashed Melons -- Honeydew, Watermelon, or Cantaloupe (introduce at 9-10 months)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Yield: approximately 3 cups

Serving Size: 3-6 Tablespoons

Ingredients

  • 1 melon

Instructions

  1. Slice the melon. Cut the melon from the rind, removing any seeds.
  2. Cut the melon into small chunks and mashed with a fork.

Mashed Kiwi (introduce at 9-10 months)

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Yield: 1 kiwi = 1/2 cup

Serving Size: 3-6 Tablespoons

Ingredients

  • Several ripe kiwi

Instructions

  1. Peel the kiwi; then, cut into small chunks.
  2. Mash the kiwi with a fork. You don’t have to remove the seeds; by this age, your baby should be able to tolerate the added texture, and the seeds themselves are digestible.

Fruit purees and mashes are delicious alone, but they can be even tastier combined (once your baby’s old enough for mixed foods). Blueberry applesauce? Peachy mashed bananas? Kiwi mango tango?
